Pohela Boishakh is one of the most colorful and popular cultural festival to all Bangladeshi and Bengali nations. The festival day is the first day of Bengali Calendar year and the name of the festival come from Sanskrit - Pahela Vaisakhi. Pohela Boishakh celebrated simultaneously in both Bangladesh and West Bengal in India. The colors, appeal, joy and happiness of this festival connects all ethnic Bengalis irrespective of religious and regional differences. This festival of elation is celebrated on 14th April of each year according to the official amended calendar which was designed by the Bangla Academy. Pohela Boishakh is the national holiday of Bangladesh and at west Bengal, India it is a public holiday.

This delightful festival celebrations mark a day of cultural unity without any distinction between class and religious affiliations. Though there are lots of festivals celebrated by the people of Bangladesh but only Pohela Boishakh comes without any preexisting expectations such as specific religious identity, culture of gift-giving, etc. It is about celebrating the simpler, rural roots and culture of the Bengal. Most of the people of Bangladesh and West Bengal of India are participate in the festival together without any burden of having to reveal one's class or ability, religious belief or any financial capacity.

Pohela Boishakh is also closely related with the rural life of each Bengali people. Usually on the festival day, the home is thoroughly washed and cleaned and they take their bath very early in the morning and also ware new and colorful clothes. Though people wear various colorful dress of this joyous day but the main focus is on read and white coloured dress. They spend most of the time of the festival day by visiting neighbors, relatives and friends. Special foods are prepared to entertain guests. Most of the people of Dhaka (Capital of Bangladesh) gather very early in the morning under the banyan tree at Ramna Park, where Chhayanat artists open the day with Rabindranath Tagore's famous song, Esho, he Boishakh, Esho Esho. There is a similar ceremony welcoming the New Year is also held at the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka. Students and teachers of the institute take out a colorful procession and parade round the campus. Social and cultural organizations celebrate the day with cultural programs. Newspapers bring out special tabloid. Radio and television telecast the special programs whole day long.
